Goodwill & Leadership
Article by Rick
Kingsboro, Past Operations Manager
Goodwill Industries
of Lorain County
3rd Quarter 2003
(Note: Although
Rick Kingsboro is no longer with Goodwill Industries of Lorain County, he was
instrumental in making this Goodwill what it is today. We thank him for his
efforts as he pursues another career.)
In corporate
America…managers are hired because of their technical skills and experience
and fired because of their lack of leadership ability. Leadership
development is about helping people build the capabilities to engage in
productive relationships and improve their effectiveness.
Goodwill
Industries International (GII) is well known for working with people with
disabilities and other barriers to employment. But I don’t think that most
people realize that the organization also encourages the Supervisors and
Managers to expand their knowledge by attending seminars, interacting with
people in the community such as the Rotary Club and Leadership of Lorain
County
I know first hand
how much the leaders of this organization care about the people they serve and
its staff members.
When I started
working at Goodwill in 1987, as an assembler, I was also a high school drop
out. The encouragement I received here at Goodwill made me want to go back and
get my education. So I went back to school to get my diploma. Over the years I
have worked my way up to Operations Manager. I am currently working on taking
some college classes and I have enrolled in the Management Training Course
offered by GII.
Through the years
that I have worked here at Goodwill I have seen a lot of changes, but the one
thing that has not changed is the commitment that this organization has to
helping people with disabilities and other barriers to employment.
